It's the beginning of February, which means Women in Horror Recognition Month is in full swing. With designs to dispel notions that women exist in horror only as "scream queens" or scantily clad cinematic victims, the mission of WIHM (founded by Hannah Neurotica) is to recognize women for their creative contributions to the genre. WIHM honors talented, accomplished women working behind the camera as directors, producers, screenwriters, makeup effects artists, as well as those working in other corners of horror artistry as authors, painters, sculpters. The truth of the matter is that women love making horror just as much as they do experiencing it, and their voice is crucial in horror storytelling.
That said, we at All Things Horror Online thought it an appropriate time to make an exciting announcement. This year we've partnered with the Etheria Film Festival to bring their selections to the East Coast. The Etheria Film Festival showcases independent fantasy and science fiction films created exclusively by women. Since this is the inaugural year, we will be the official premiere site for the festival!
We will host the premiere screening in Boston during Summer/Fall of 2012 (Details TBA). Etheria is currently accepting submission until March 31, so there's still plenty of time to enter.
Etheria is the creation of Heidi Honeycutt, owner of Planet Fury and co-director of the Viscera Film Festival. Etheria expands on the foundation of Viscera while broadening the scope of films in the repertoire. Women from all over the world will have a chance to share their visions with enthusiastic audiences. Mike and I are quite proud to be a part of its unveiling. As fans of fantasy and science fiction, we're happy to expand upon what we do here on the site and with our screening series.
In addition to this exciting news, Mike and I will also be screening some films by talented ladies at 8pm on Friday, February 24 at the Somerville Theater. Stay tuned for more news about that event! CELEBRATE WOMEN IN HORROR ALL YEAR ROUND!
